Background and history of 4Test Instrument

4Test Instrument AS is Keysight’s authorized distributor and authorized technology partner of test- and measurement instruments in Norway.

Our roots at 4Test stretch back to the days of Hewlett-Packard (later Agilent), and to HP’s first office in Norway (1967). When Agilent later decided to close its local Norwegian office in 2002, four of the former employees of HP/Agilent decided to establish the Norwegian company 4Test (thereof the number 4). Since then, we have remained the authorized Norwegian distributor and partner of Agilent Technologies (today Keysight) and with a long and proud experience with instruments both the days of both HP/Agilent/Keysight.

4Test Instrument Today

Between 2019 and 2021 the original founders and owners of 4Test eventually all retired and a new generation of measurement experts entered the company. 4Test also shifted ownership in 2019 and is today collaborating closely also with Altoo in Denmark. As of 2024 both companies share the same daily manager, and that also has an engineering background from Agilent Technologies in Europe and US.

4Test’s employees working with technical sales share the same training as Keysight’s own employees, with start-up training at Keysight HQ in Santa Rosa, California. We are still close to Keysight and participate monthly in product and technology presentations, and are the contact point for product demonstrations, evaluations, service, calibrations, and more. Through our collaboration we maintain a high expertise on measurement technology, products, and applications.

Apart from Keysight we also carry a broad range of instruments and solutions from our many other international partners. Our aim is to be a “one-stop-shop” for all your Test & Measurement needs, -ranging from a simple multimeter to a fully anechoic EMC chamber!

Background and History of Keysight (former Hewlett-Packard and Agilent Technologies)

After two demergers Keysight still holds their position by far as the largest Test and Measurement (T&M) instrument manufacturer. As of 2024 Keysight is positioned as number one in market- and technology for several of the instrument categories and carries the widest range of instruments on the marked.

The origin and history of Keysight started with the foundation of Hewlett-Packard Company in 1939. HP was initially founded with the mission to develop and manufacture electronic test- and measurement instruments, and at that time most of the products were needed in the US defence and aerospace industry. Their first product was however an audio oscillator, and Walt Disney Studios was among the first customers as they used this oscillator to produce effects for their movie “Fantasia” in 1940.

Over the years Hewlett-Packard became involved in several other business areas which created tremendous growth. Eventually changes and growth in the computer division later resulted in the demerging of the company, and where the electronic test- and measurement divisions became a new company with the “new” name Agilent Technologies.

Once again, in 2014 a second demerging was done from Agilent Technologies to establish Keysight Technologies, to enable a shift in focus, research and funding back to T&M, back to the origin of HP. Yet it’s the same owners, same people and same products as Agilent Technologies and HP, and products and information all the way back to HP is still covered on the webpage of Keysight today. 

4Test and Keysight Support, Training and Services

Along with Keysight we support customers with a range of technical questions, both related to support, measurement configurations, instrument evaluations, calibrations, and service. Our objective at 4Test is to support the customer throughout the instrument lifetime, and to be the T&M instrument provider that enables the best value throughout your investment.

High quality instruments may cost more initially but will provide you with the best investment and value over time. Our instruments are often upgradable, well documented, and with support for years to come.

Just like our customers we too view larger instrument purchases as a long-term investment that can last decades. High quality instruments can provide competitive advantages for greater competitiveness, and help your company obtain and keep a technological advantage in your marked!

Keysight Training:

Along with Keysight we also provide training classes, instrument demos, loans and evaluation support. Classes can be held at customer premises or at our office in Oslo and are provided by product specialists from Keysight.

Keysight Services:

All repair and calibration services on Keysight/Agilent/HP products are performed at Keysight’s service centre, and with the majority done at their European service centre in Böblingen, Stuttgart, Germany. These are all well-established service centres with solid competence and certifications for repair, calibrations, and also for accredited calibrations.
